SCULPTURE + INTERCEPTING THE WASTE STREAM is an introductory sculpture course with a primary focus on transforming waste material into 3 dimensional works of art. The course will introduce environmentally conscious techniques and processes as well as guidance in terms of professional presentation and practices. Group discussions and critiques, video screenings, readings and workshops will complement studio time. Students are asked to come to the first day of class with a sizable collection of material they’ve collected from the “waste stream” that they find inspiring as a possible medium. The class will culminate with a pop-up exhibit of the works created by the students at a local gallery that will also function as a fundraiser. Proceeds from the sale of the students sculptures will go to help clean up local rivers in Staunton.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

MATERIALS
In addition to using the materials that students collect from the “waste stream,” the Department of Art and Art History has ordered other required supplies and tools from manufacturers and suppliers of art materials. Each class member’s student account will be charged a materials fee for these purchases.

EVALUATION
Grading will be based primarily upon the student’s effort, which is reflected in the following:

•the level of success in meeting the objectives of given exercises and projects;
•participation in critiques and class discussions;
•the level of caring and conscientiousness;

Class attendance — working in class — is very important. Also, expect to work many hours outside of class time on the assigned exercises, attend related screenings and related event/s.
Photo-document all of your work. There will be individual reviews and/or a final group critique at the end of May Term.

During this May Term course each student is allowed only one absence, excused or unexcused, without a penalty. Every absence after that will reduce a student’s final grade by 1/3 of a letter grade. For example, a B will become a B- with 2 absences, a C+ with 3 absences. Any student with 4 or more absences will automatically fail the course.

Each student is expected to be in class on time and to remain for the duration of the class. Late arrivals and early departures will affect the student’s grade, and may result in being counted as an absence.

USING THE STUDIO
This wonderful space is your space. Feel free to use it whenever the building is open — day or night. You are responsible for picking up/cleaning up when you are finished working. Make sure that you read the Guidelines and Safety Rules for Using the Deming Studio.

During May Term keep your materials in one of the wooden lockers. To claim a locker simply find an empty one and put your name on it. It is very likely you will need to share a locker with another student. At the end of May Term please clear out your locker.
Very important: always turn on ventilation fans when painting; and, pour dirty paint thinner, etc. into the appropriate containers — not into the sinks.
